The Learning Environment

Sturgeon Heights’ classrooms are exciting and stimulating environments for learning. Staff use innovative and research-based methods of teaching that are student-centered and promote life-long learning. The hallways are a celebration of student work. All students are engaged in reading activities which helps build a solid foundation for the enjoyment of reading and learning. We are a school that values the importance of academic success and the development of the whole student through excellent programs such as the Arts, Music, Religion, Athletics, and Complementary courses. Mentorship is the foundation for quality learning. Quality learning happens in the classroom, on the playground, from student to student, adult to students, student to adult, adult to adult; involving outside resource people and community resources. We bring curriculum alive by making it relevant, interactive and meaningful. Our classrooms are places that students want to be!

Special Education / Differentiation

All students in our school are valued for their individuality and what they contribute to SHS. We value the social and physical development of our students along with their academic development. Teachers address the learning needs and styles of our students which optimize their learning, their creativity and their potential. All staff work collaboratively for the benefit of student achievement. We value the unique abilities and gifts our students bring to the classroom and address the learning needs through research-based strategies and techniques. Programming that is adaptive and inclusive is used to contribute to the success of all students.

At Sturgeon Heights School students are made aware of the learning targets based on Alberta Curricular outcomes that are communicated in student-friendly language. We provide regular and ongoing feedback of achievement to our students and parents. Feedback is specific, informative and delivered in positive language that identifies areas of growth and encourages all students to strive for personal success.
